Red Palms Malaysian Restaurant

We decided to go to a Malaysian restaurant located beside the very busy Kingspark HK Cafe on Westminster Hwy, Richmond. When we went inside, it was fairly empty on a Saturday night so we were a little hesitant when entering. On top of that, there was live karaoke being performed fairly loudly. It was chef, and probably the owner who served us that night which was very education and provided the very good service. The place was quite dim and loud due to karaoke but it was clean.

They have things here you probably cannot find in places like Tropika. I could tell the chef/owner was native Malaysian so that is a good thing. He advised us the most unique authentic dishes would not be on the menu so we ordered a dish verbally only.

This is “Bak Kut Teh Soup” which is best described as beef broth with some herbal taste. It was a little bit on the salty side but strong unique flavour to say the least.

This is the first time I’ve tried this type of potato/root which is supposedly grown underwater. It is stir fried with chicken and shrimp, very flavourful. Recommended. I believe it was called “A’lo hei”. We also had Prompet fish which is quite common in Chinese food, but it is eaten with a sweet and sour sauce. It is basically like a lighter version of sweet/sour pork except it is fish.
